Castellfollit de la Roca es uno de los once municipios que integran el Parque Natural de la Zona Volcánica de la Garrotxa. El pueblo, de 1.000 habitantes, está situado encima de un riscal basáltico de unos 40 m de altura y de un 1 km de longitud.

El itinerario empieza en el km 45,2 de la ctra. de Girona a Olot (GI-522), cerca del cruce con la ctra. de Oix (GIV-5221). Desde ese punto debemos cruzar la carretera y bajar en dirección al río Fluvià. El camino empieza junto al puente y atraviesa huertos situados en tierras muy fértiles correspondientes a antiguas terrazas fluviales del Fluvià.

Sigue por la orilla izquierda del río y lo atraviesa más adelante por un pasadero de madera construido recientemente. En la otra orilla, el camino sigue entre huertos separados por muros de piedra seca, cruza el río Toronell por un puentecillo, y se encarama al Camí Vell (Camino Viejo), una calle empedrada que conduce hasta la puerta de la iglesia de Sant Salvador, quemada durante la Guerra Civil y que en la actualidad, además de usarse como sala cultural, se está restaurando.
